Mark Warner's path to politics began in the business world. After graduating from George Washington University Law School, he co-founded a venture capital firm and later became CEO of Nextel Communications. A Virginia Democrat

In 2001, Warner entered the political arena by winning the Democratic nomination for Governor of Virginia. He went on to defeat Republican incumbent Jim Gilmore in the general election, becoming the first Democratic governor of Virginia in a generation.
