Children's Rights and Education

Every Child's Right to an Education

Every child has the right to an education. This right is enshrined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), which has been ratified by nearly every country in the world. The UNCRC states that every child has the right to free and compulsory primary education, and that different forms of secondary education must be available to every child.

Knowing Your Rights

All children have rights, including the right to know their rights. UNICEF Canada's Rights Respecting Schools (RRS) initiative uses the UNCRC to make sure that children know their rights.

A poster from UNICEF Canada's RRS initiative lists all of the rights that apply to children. This poster is a great starting point for displays and class work to teach children about their rights.

The Importance of Children's Rights

The UNCRC is an important agreement that protects children's rights. Countries that have ratified the UNCRC have promised to ensure that children are treated with respect and that their rights are upheld.

Children's rights are essential for their development and well-being. Children who know their rights are more likely to be healthy, successful, and happy.
